Weight Loss Journey: Getting Started

I am ready to get started on one of my goals for 2013...WEIGHT LOSS. In general, I want to be a healthier person by changing my eating habits, incorporating exercise into my life, and ultimately start shedding pounds.

Most people refer to losing weight as a "weight loss journey". I have been on this journey before...

On June 1, 2005, I joined Weight Watchers (WW) for the first time. I was student teaching and finishing up my teaching portfolio. (If you are interested, you can take a look at my portfolio even though it needs updating - click here) It was a busy time in my life, but I remember the distinct moment that lead me to join Weight Watchers...I was trying on clothes with my grandma, and a size 18 was too tight. I was on the verge of wearing a size 20. I hit rock bottom, in terms of my weight, in that moment, in that dressing room. A few weeks later, I was an official Weight Watchers member...weighing in at 211 pounds.

 
 

I needed to lose about 50 pounds, which at the time, seemed impossible. But I was determined to shed those pounds…I followed the WW plan to a tee, except I didn't add the activity/exercise component into my weight loss journey. Each week, pound by pound, my weight went down. In a little less than a year, I lost 51 pounds...weighing in at 160 pounds! I was able to shop at stores that I never dreamed of. I felt better than ever, and my self-esteem was through the roof! I was proud of my accomplishment and my body.

 
Over the past 5 years, I packed on the pounds. Today, I sit writing this post at my original weight. I gained all of the weight back...
 
In March 2012, I started to make changes in my life. Sort of a "life makeover", if you will. I made changes to our home, began regular counseling, balanced my medicines, owned the role of housewife, and started substitute teaching. In my mind, weight loss is the final component in my "life makeover".
I tried eating healthy, cooking healthy recipes, trying not to eat out...all of the things that I know I needed to do to lose weight. All of those strategies just didn't work for me. Then, I had my "ah ha!" moment. I thought, duh…Weight Watchers has worked for me in the past…so, let's do what works. Why didn't I think of that sooner? Maybe I wasn't ready to commit to a weight loss plan...but the important thing is that I am ready now!
 
I joined Weight Watchers on May 10, 2013...weighing in at 210.6
 
 
The following week, I weighed in at 203.8.
 

My most recent weigh in was on May 24, 2013. I lost 1.2 pounds! My total weight loss so far is 8 pounds!
 
 
I am within reach of being under 200 pounds! I am motivated to stick to the plan because it works and I know that I will be back in the 100s soon!
 
This is just the beginning of my journey, and I am taking it one week at a time. There have been yummy temptations that have come my way, but I remind myself that "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.", as one of my WW leaders said.
 
I will continue to post weight loss updates. Sharing this journey with you is a great way for me to be accountable!

  3. Hi Audrey! I've watched and enjoyed your videos. I'd like to share my story with you in hopes that it will be helpful to you. A year and 3 months ago I was obese. I weighed 222.5 lbs. Now, I am at a healthy and normal weight for my height at 163 pounds. Here is how I did it. My mother (and God) is who I give all the credit to. She researches and is very interested in true health and the true facts behind food. She and I watched a documentary together called "Hungry For Change" (http://www.hungryforchange.tv/ you can also find it on NetFlix). The very next day I started my weight loss journey and there is no turning back. My mom also read the book "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis. She shared all of the information with me. Both Hungry for Change and Wheat Belly were pivotal to my weight loss and healthy lifestyle. In a nutshell, I abandoned completely all traces of wheat, sugar, and processed foods. That's it. No turning back and I don't miss it at all. I filled my meals with organic, natural, singe ingredient foods : ALL meats, ALL fruits, ALL vegetables (I do limit potatoes and corn), rice, NUTS, beans). Food has never tasted so good. Audrey, I have dieted before and I gained it all back. When I first started this lifestyle change...the first week I lost 7 pounds! I have consistently shed weight each week! You don't need to count calories or points. I am amazed at how seemingly effortlessly I have been loosing weight. Give your body what nature intended. Cut out the man made, processed, chemical laden food. Just abandon it. It is no longer an option for fueling your body. Don't have any junk in your house or buy it or eat it at anyone's place. Just forget it and move on. A quote from Hungry for Change that really stood out to me what along the lines of our bodies are starving on a nutritional level. We may be feeding it tons of food...but if it is chemically processed with tons of ingredients by man...our bodies don't recognize it and can't use it...so it's stored as fat. I feel the need to share this information with people. It truly changed my life. I am so grateful and thankful to God and my mom for sharing this with me. I am so happy...I never have to "diet" and I've lost weight the TRULY HEALTHY way!!! I am only 22 years old and I am so so so happy!     1. Thank you so much for sharing your story! Congratulations on your success! That is amazing! I have struggled with weight my whole life and I know I can lose the weight - I have done it before. I agree with you about the processed foods and such...I just don't know if it will work with my lifestyle and circumstances right now. But, I am going to look for the documentary and book...gather information might change my mind. I don't view WW as a diet, it is a lifestyle change. And it is all about learning to make the right choices when it comes to food. That is my biggest hurdle...portions and the right choices. Thanks so much for sharing and passing the info along. I will look into it! :)

  4. Hi Audrey, I'm so happy I've found you here. You are such an inspiration. I am 5'2'' and weighed 181 after having 4 kiddies. As of March I have lost 40 pounds and counting. I used garcinia.
